North Eleuthera: Serenity Incarnate
The Other Side on North Eleuthera redefines rustic glam adding an unassuming yet harmonized elemental chic along the most brilliant of Bahamian backdrops. The island itself remains a bit obscure when it comes to the Bahamas, a characteristic that undoubtedly drew my eye, and upon stumbling across the Ocean View and the Other Side, this enduring oasis delivered on every count. Even upon initial correspondence with its inimitable staff, it became exceedingly apparent that this retreat would prove not only idyllic, but extraordinary. Its modest size, yet spacious property, and minimal number of accommodations (only 3 tents and 3 shacks) afford perfect and complete serenity along with the ideal formula for socializing in a semi-isolated setting (to which you can interact with the other guests in accordance with your comfort and liking). Similarly, its expert staff stands ready to accommodate every desire accordingly.

Concerning which place to stay on-site, in case of seasonal wind (and for those in favor of a paramount view), a shack would be recommended; however, if proximity to the beach and an open-air bath are preferred, a tent would assuredly be most suitable. The accompanying breakfast proved divine, complete with copious coffee (for addicts like me), delectable banana bread paired with fresh fruit, and your choice of delicious mains. The staff also can prepare your choice of lunch, and if you choose to stay on site for dinner, unsurprisingly, that is exceptional as well.
November too (or the Fall timeframe) presents the most opportune time to escape, just prior to the advent of the hurried holiday season, yet still warm enough to quell the onset of winter’s dreary days. Additionally, dining at the Other Side’s sister (and original) property on Harbour Island proved absolutely superlative, serving some of the most enchanting and innovative cocktails, as well as the most resplendent meal in which we had the luxury to indulge while there. The staff can also arrange for a snorkeling excursion for the duration of your choice (a must in my opinion when it comes to the Caribbean). We were fortunate enough to see an array of marine life, to include sea turtles, lionfish, and schools of others.

The property also offers a private beach and fabulous infinity pool, as well as transportation to and from Harbour Island for those wishing to visit one of the many other beaches (to include Pink Sands Beach, which is highly recommended), simply absorb some more of island life, or seek ample opportunity to scout for souvenirs. Golf carts for getting around the Island can also be arranged (preferably in the mornings), as will the water taxi to bring you there and back. The Golf Carts are recommended unless you’re terribly keen to walk or bike about. It is also possible to take the Jeep out for a drive south, which was similarly lovely, and as there is only one highway running north and south, it’s almost guaranteed impossible to lose your way.
Take a moment to pause at the narrowed Glass Window Bridge and remark at the stark contrast between the profound Atlantic blues, and accompanying violence striking the rocks, against the completely stilled and tranquil topaz blued greens that typify the Caribbean. The lovely Queen’s Baths are also worth a stopover, only a bit beyond the Bridge, which also affords marked dissimilarity from its respective western shores. Despite the contrast, the divergence of both the islands’ sides somehow epitomizes the essence of balance and serves to define and shape Eleuthera in a most unreserved and awesome way. In short, Eleuthera awaits.
