Mediterranean Musings: Why You Should Search South
With the overture of August and correlating summer holidays now fully underway, one perhaps unlikely destination should categorically headline every discerning traveler’s list. Although contemplation of the Mediterranean may rightfully conjure images of glamorous Greek atolls, bedazzling Italian coasts, or exclusivity accompanying French Rivieran enclaves, an equally entreating and exquisite experience can also be found slightly further south. Heralding a history spanning millennia and subject to multiple empires, to include that of ancient Carthage – home to the legendary Hannibal – Tunisia serves as another formidable option when ruminating a Mediterranean escape. Not only does this beautiful North African state eclipse the annals of antiquity, ever boasting diverse and formidable civilizations, but Tunisia of today also espouses a palpable sense of hope, an inviting and felicific spirit, complete with the most idyllic and alluring urban and seaside panoramas the Mediterranean can afford. Replete with picturesque vistas, exceptional beaches, eclectic cuisine, and hallowed hallmarks commemorating eras past, Tunis irrefutably holds something for all.

Particularly for both sea and beach lovers alike, Tunisia’s incessant summer sun stands only one reason amongst many to find yourself on its sublime shores. Should you opt to stay local, explore the plages of Gammarth and Marsa, or travel the relatively short distance north to bask in the exceptionally breathtaking beaches of Bizerte. And for the culinary-inclined, be sure to explore Tunisia’s gastronomic côté; indulge in downtown Tunis’ local delights, sample fish in la Goulette, and be sure to visit my personal favorites finds. In Marsa, you mustn’t miss dining at Le Golfe, a beachside establishment that continues to classically encapsulate 1950s “Cabanon” spirit à la Marsoise. Additionally, you must also book an evening (or the entirety of your stay) at the one and only Dar El Jeld. This five-star Hotel and Spa offers two restaurants, and although only its rooftop venue is open during August, I would recommend no other place to spend an evening. Its stunning Tunis toiture offers an unparalleled and indescribably beautiful view: one that entrancingly permits quiet admiration as the sun slowly melts and softly succumbs to the onset of night.

Not only does Dar El Jeld host the most fabulous roof and restaurant in town, it also holds the most luxurious of Tunisian accommodations. It certainly serves as my address of choice whilst visiting this tantalizing capital. This is true not only due to its elevated and emblematic design, but also given its downtown proximity to the multitude of surrounding sites. Naturally, these include the city’s famed mosques and enduring thirteenth century souks. Though further exploration is also merited, whereby a visit to Carthage and the Musée Bardo should comprise your itinerary, while a litany of other ancient ruins similarly await discovery. Also, do not forego a stopover in Sidi Bousaid. This unequivocal jewel of an endroit might regale images of Santorini due to its signature perforating blue and white accentuated streets. Yet it stands apart, espousing this shared Mediterranean palette in its own signature way. And lastly, for those indefatigable night owls, Tunis also boasts an affable night scene with multiple music and after-hours venues, such as Wax Bar, amongst others.

Finally, for anyone standing unconvinced, perhaps further elaboration on its affordability and emplacement might provide the requisite incentive to consider and ultimately visit this incredible land. Unlike many Mediterranean escapes, whereby prices can prove exorbitant, Tunisia offers a viable alternative, as it holds far greater affordability when compared to its northern neighbors of France and Italy. Though despite this, it also holds commensurate amenities for those seeking the heights of luxury. Additionally, its proximity to Europe provides an expedient option for a most wondrous holiday, as flights from Frankfurt, for example, average only two hours. In short, this burgeoning Arab democratic sun-soaked state not only exudes a promising future, but also certainly affords everything you might desire, be it for a short stay or extended getaway. Thus, for this and all of the aforementioned reasons, Tunisia – a perhaps less likely destination – should absolutely top your list of choicest holidays.
