Alerte : UK Travel (Transit & Visiting 2025 Requirement for US Citizens)

Salut, all! My apologies for being a bit late getting this out, but effective 8 January 2025 new entry requirements are in place for US citizens traveling, or even passing through, airports within the United Kingdom. This novel requirement applies to the UK, as well as all British Overseas Territories and Northern Ireland. Furthermore, this ordnance pertains to travel be it in the form of tourism, business, visits of short duration, or simply for anyone who passes through a UK airport. Though there are some exemptions, it is recommended to review the State Department’s page* to ensure you are in adherence of these new requirements.

Thus should you find yourself in one of these categories (i.e. visiting or transiting through the UK), an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is required. It is important to note that processing an ETA could take up to three working days — so plan ahead and file for one early. Additionally, there is a cost to obtain an ETA (originally $12.75 — now £20 or ~$27), and it remains valid either through your passport’s period of validity — otherwise two years, whichever is shorter.

You can learn more about and apply for your ETA here. Finally, the purported fastest way to apply is to download the UK ETA app. However, there is also an option to apply online (which is directed for use should you be applying for someone else who is not with you or if unable to use the app).

With this year’s travel season impending, hopefully having knowledge of this will help ease some frustrations, especially should you be UK bound or even find yourself passing through.
